A New Start

Today is a day to begin again, always with the hope of success. I've been back in Weight Watchers the last year or so. Of course, I've joined and quit many times since I was 28, many years ago, never reaching that elusive lifetime membership. It's such a big item on my bucket list! Since rejoining about a year ago, I lost about 38 pounds, and during this quarantine period, I didn't do so well--probably like many others.

What a strange time we are in. I've had months of mostly being home doing quiet and sedentary things. So eating has been quite the entertainment. Reading many of the funny memes during this time makes me think I'm not the only one in this boat! Things are beginning to gradually open back up here in Texas, but I don't think the meetings are happening yet, except online. So after months of just eating whatever and packing back on way too many pounds, I am committing again. I think I gained back around 17-20 pounds--I keep forgetting to weigh when I first get up. I'm curious about how the others in my WW group fared during this pandemic. I'm ready for the old normal! But I must keep at this, learning to take care of myself and keeping with the journey.

I spent quite a bit of time in thought trying to encourage myself this past weekend. I decided to make a goal to get through an entire day back on track with the points. I am experimenting with the Purple program right now, but I suspect I will switch to green and blue to see if one or the other fits me the best. So here's Day 1!

Bananas - 0 points
Oatmeal - 0 points
2 light cheese sticks - 2 points
Banana - 0 points (I have bananas that need to be eaten soon!)
Turkey breast and mustard on WW bread - 5 points
Grapes - 0 points
Broccoli with a tiny bit of Velveeta melted in - 1 point
Mashed potatoes (with some cream) - 2 points
1 1/2 T peanut butter and a teaspoon honey on 2 slices Sara Lee delightful bread - 8 points
1 serving Chewy Sweet Tart Minis - 3 points

It was surprising how quick the daily points were used up in the evening. In fact, I mistakenly thought the bread was free on the Purple program--not so.  Also the deli turkey is not free.  I may need to find another brand.  My WW app shows I used 23 points, which is okay because I was planning on spreading my weekly points more evenly over the week, but I was thinking I ate a lot fewer points than I did until I logged them onto the app.  But it's interesting that according to my FitBit app, I only ate 1304 calories which seems very low for that many points.  My goal was around 1600, but I am sure not complaining about eating only 1304.

Another step I took today is preparing to greatly increase my activity. I hunted around for my FitBit, charged it up, logged back in and began to track my steps. I'm just hoping to get through my first day somewhat successfully to encourage me to keep going. Hopefully, I will adjust again quickly and actually get enthusiastic about all of this! Sorry for the dry post. Starting a new blog is another step to motivate me! I'm definitely going to use some points before going to bed, though I don't know if I will hit 16.

Day Six

Woke up about 10:30 after a very late night, just couldn't fall asleep. Had a Cliff bar early as usual.  Had carrots, grapes, chips and salsa for lunch.  A few animal crackers before dinner, then chicken breast, green peppers and onions, greens, queso, Mexican rice, Oreos, chocolate covered pretzels.   Ok, tomorrow, I'm going to try to watch my snacking tomorrow.  Let's see how I do. No walking, but we went to our storage and dug out household stuff, so I did get some exercise.   One regular Diet Coke, one Zevia, quite a bit of water.

Day 5 - Some New Steps

A little more background: During this funk I was in, I stopped doing almost everything.  All I wanted to do was stay in bed, or if up, watch TV or read.  That's a terrible place to be.  I suspect many of us have given up on life for at least brief times in our lives.  I don't have to work, and there was very, very little I absolutely had to do.  Any trips out of the house were usually to the grocery store.  When we traveled to see the kids, I would manage to come "alive" for a few days, and then go back to my hole when we returned home.  I guess it's a perfect description of depression.   Jake didn't pressure me, pretty much left me alone.  I was glad about that, though I did from time to time tell him what was going on with me.  I just could think of nothing I wanted to do, interested in nothing.  I tried to keep my communication with God open and honest, so I least I wasn't totally hiding from Him.   If something ne...

Days 27 and 28

The last two days are not really worth recording.   This is like one of those times in the past when I arrived at a point where I never got back on track, and my aim is to change that pattern.  So many times in the past when I would start on Weight Watchers, I would be perfect for the first three weeks or so.  Then as soon as I cheated the first time, it seemed like I could never get back on track.  And then I would quit.  That perfection thinking defeated me. Also, the first time I had a weigh-in day when I knew or thought I would be up on the scales, I would not go to that meeting because I wanted a loss every time I went.  Then the next week might be worse, and the missed meetings would stretch out until I finally just quit. Now it's very obvious to me why I have not succeeded in the past.  With those kinds of expectations, who can measure up?  Any kind of journey is dotted with slipups and failures, usually many, along the way....
