Days 15, 16 and 17 - Time in the Hill Country

I didn't mean to go three days without updating.  Our time out of town went well, though not perfect.

Day 15

I was pretty lazy on Monday.  I let the others walk down to take care of the cat.  Monday was a bit of a struggle.  I was trying to think of some decent meals for all of us, but I felt so at a loss in this kitchen.  It was so HEALTHY compared to what I am used to with unfamiliar ingredients.  I did suggest grilled cheese sandwiches, and the boys were thrilled about that idea.  So I made sandwiches for them, then I made oatmeal for me since I hadn't had breakfast yet.  From what I remember I snacked in the afternoon on some of my stash: a boiled egg, cheese stick, a banana.

I had decided to make some kind of pasta for dinner with a cheesy sauce.  It turned out rather strange with the ingredients that were in the kitchen, but the boys really liked it.  I had a bit of it.  The whole thing put me in a rather strange mood.  It was one of those times when self-doubt really set in--doubts about my ability and being enough for others.  I had a peanut butter sandwich pretty soon after that and snacked off and on until bedtime.  I think I had about 25 points, which was fine, because I had ton of extra points.

I did have some good one-on-one time with Levi, the younger one.  He had taken a long nap in the afternoon, and ended up staying up with me--we played Sequence until I finally sent him to bed.  I think I felt the self-doubt mostly after I went to bed.

Day 16

Tuesday was a very long but amazing day.  We had decided to go over to my younger son's house.  They (Jared and Kari) have a three-year-old daughter (Colette or "Cola"), a 9-month-old name Griffin ("Griffey").  We went into town first and picked up Chicken Express for everyone (chicken strips, mac and cheese, fried okra).  I got me fried catfish like I always do.  We were having a nice time being together, taking care of babies, sitting outside watching them play.

Levi was asking about going to the river in Kerrville to kayak.  I didn't take him seriously, but Jared thought it was a great idea, so we loaded up about 4:00 and went into Kerrville.  The park and river are so nice.  There were only two kayaks, so most of us sat in lawn chairs on the ground watching the others.  It was just one of those times when you so enjoy the company and treasure the kids and their antics.

Me and my youngest, little Griffey.

Levi, having the best time!

Levi working it hard.

Jared and little Colette.  We call her Cola or Cola Bear.

Love my grandkids!

Daughter-in-Law Keri and Levi

Me and Jake, plus all four grandkids.  Jet is my oldest.
We have the "bigs" and the "littles!"

Later we went back to the house, had dinner, watched a Marvel movie, headed home about 10:30 and went to bed.

I had a chicken taco for dinner and some rice, and did really well on my diet.  Still not a lot of walking, but I got some in at the park.  I was in such a better state yesterday and felt very grateful and in touch with my family.

Day 17

Jet and Levi's parents (my older son, Jason, and his wife, Crystal) were coming in a little after lunch.  I slept super late, and Jake and the boys were playing Sequence when I came down.  (They home-school, by the way).  When they finished, we all walked down to play with the kitty for awhile.  Everyone had sandwiches for lunch, except I had oatmeal again and a banana.  Jason and Crystal came in, and we visited for an hour or two before we packed up to leave for home.  I ate out of our ice chest, a boiled egg, chicken, cheese stick, mandarin orange (seems to be my go-to right now).  When I got home, I had the other catfish filet, later cottage cheese, pineapple, peanut butter sandwich.

Levi made the comment this morning that he wished we could come stay with them more often (when the parents are out of town).  I was pleasantly surprised that he and Jet enjoy it so much.  I made the comment that Jake and I sort of think of ourselves as rather boring.  Levi emphatically said, "You are not boring!"  Wow.  I loved that so much.  I was never really close to any of my grandparents and didn't feel a huge loss when they died.  So this felt very special to me.  I have always wanted them to feel like I find each of them very cherished and special.  His comment really helped with the self-doubt.  So what if I didn't make amazing meals!

It's always good to be back home and back in a routine.  I do my best that way like most of us do.  I'm not sure if I lost any weight, but I did a good job of staying reasonably on track.  After I got home, I began putting steps onto my FitBit and jogged 8 minutes.  I also did 25 leaning pushups and 15 squats.  I had over 7800 steps by midnight.  Truly, I do the best at this the more I am at home.

Day Six

Woke up about 10:30 after a very late night, just couldn't fall asleep. Had a Cliff bar early as usual.  Had carrots, grapes, chips and salsa for lunch.  A few animal crackers before dinner, then chicken breast, green peppers and onions, greens, queso, Mexican rice, Oreos, chocolate covered pretzels.   Ok, tomorrow, I'm going to try to watch my snacking tomorrow.  Let's see how I do. No walking, but we went to our storage and dug out household stuff, so I did get some exercise.   One regular Diet Coke, one Zevia, quite a bit of water.

Day 5 - Some New Steps

A little more background: During this funk I was in, I stopped doing almost everything.  All I wanted to do was stay in bed, or if up, watch TV or read.  That's a terrible place to be.  I suspect many of us have given up on life for at least brief times in our lives.  I don't have to work, and there was very, very little I absolutely had to do.  Any trips out of the house were usually to the grocery store.  When we traveled to see the kids, I would manage to come "alive" for a few days, and then go back to my hole when we returned home.  I guess it's a perfect description of depression.   Jake didn't pressure me, pretty much left me alone.  I was glad about that, though I did from time to time tell him what was going on with me.  I just could think of nothing I wanted to do, interested in nothing.  I tried to keep my communication with God open and honest, so I least I wasn't totally hiding from Him.   If something ne...

Days 27 and 28

The last two days are not really worth recording.   This is like one of those times in the past when I arrived at a point where I never got back on track, and my aim is to change that pattern.  So many times in the past when I would start on Weight Watchers, I would be perfect for the first three weeks or so.  Then as soon as I cheated the first time, it seemed like I could never get back on track.  And then I would quit.  That perfection thinking defeated me. Also, the first time I had a weigh-in day when I knew or thought I would be up on the scales, I would not go to that meeting because I wanted a loss every time I went.  Then the next week might be worse, and the missed meetings would stretch out until I finally just quit. Now it's very obvious to me why I have not succeeded in the past.  With those kinds of expectations, who can measure up?  Any kind of journey is dotted with slipups and failures, usually many, along the way....
